Kenya

Kenya, officially known as the Republic of Kenya, is a country located in East Africa. It borders Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. The capital city is Nairobi, which is also the country’s largest city and a major economic and diplomatic hub in Africa.

Kenya gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1963. It has a diverse geography that includes savannah grasslands, mountains, the Great Rift Valley, lakes, and a coastline along the Indian Ocean. Mount Kenya, the second-highest mountain in Africa, is one of its major natural landmarks.

The economy of Kenya is one of the largest and most developed in East Africa, driven by sectors such as agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, financial services, and information technology. Kenya is also known for its wildlife and national parks, including the Maasai Mara, making tourism a key contributor to the economy.

Kenya is an active member of international and regional organizations such as the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), East African Community (EAC), World Trade Organization (WTO), and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

Accreditation Body ISO 17011

The official accreditation body of the Republic of Kenya operating in accordance with ISO/IEC 17011 – Conformity assessment — Requirements for accreditation bodies accrediting conformity assessment bodies is the Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS). KENAS is the national accreditation body established by the Government of Kenya under Legal Notice No. 55 of 2009, and it operates under the Ministry responsible for trade and industry.

In compliance with ISO/IEC 17011, KENAS is responsible for accrediting conformity assessment bodies such as testing and calibration laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025), medical laboratories (ISO 15189), inspection bodies (ISO/IEC 17020), certification bodies for management systems (ISO/IEC 17021-1), product certification bodies (ISO/IEC 17065), personnel certification bodies (ISO/IEC 17024), and greenhouse gas validation and verification bodies (ISO 14065).

By operating under ISO/IEC 17011, KENAS ensures competence, impartiality, consistency, and transparency in accreditation activities. It also participates in international accreditation cooperation frameworks, supporting global recognition of certificates and test reports issued by bodies accredited in Kenya.

In the Republic of Kenya, laboratories are accredited by the Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS) in accordance with internationally recognized laboratory standards. The correct standard for testing and calibration laboratories is ISO/IEC 17025 – General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories, while medical laboratories are accredited under ISO 15189 – Medical laboratories — Requirements for quality and competence.

Laboratories accredited under ISO/IEC 17025 must demonstrate technical competence of personnel, validated testing and calibration methods, properly calibrated equipment with traceability to international measurement standards, evaluation of measurement uncertainty, participation in proficiency testing, and implementation of a quality management system. In Kenya, ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation covers laboratories in sectors such as agriculture, food safety, environmental testing, construction materials, petroleum and energy, chemical analysis, microbiology, and metrology.

Medical laboratories accredited under ISO 15189 must demonstrate competence in clinical testing, quality control procedures, patient confidentiality, laboratory safety, and accurate reporting of diagnostic results.
